AMPP STANDARDS
Raise the Bar with New VIS Guides
The AMPP VIS Guide series provides a trusted visual reference for evaluating surface preparation quality. The series has expanded with two new guides designed to support long-lasting coatings:
- VIS Guide 10: Steel surfaces prepared by non-thermal atmospheric plasma cleaning.
- VIS Guide 11: Steel surfaces prepared by pulsed laser ablation.
Use these guides to bring critical clarity to your surface preparation methods and ensure consistent, defensible quality in your work.
AMPP AROUND THE WORLD
COMMON QUESTIONS
Quick answers to common questions connected to this month’s AMPPlify Update, including the Ambassador Program, contractor qualification, membership, pipeline integrity, hydrogen embrittlement, and VIS Guides.
What is the AMPP Ambassador Program?
The AMPP Ambassador Program is a global volunteer initiative that empowers members to advocate for the materials protection and performance profession. Ambassadors help strengthen industry connections, share technical knowledge, promote professional development opportunities, and support AMPP’s mission around the world.
Why is contractor qualification important for infrastructure projects?
Contractor qualification helps asset owners reduce risk, improve project quality, and increase long-term infrastructure reliability. Programs such as the AMPP Quality Procedures (QP) Program establish recognized standards for contractor capabilities, quality management, and project execution.
What are the benefits of joining a professional corrosion and materials protection association?
Professional associations provide access to technical resources, industry standards, training, certifications, networking opportunities, and career development support. AMPP membership connects professionals with a global community of corrosion engineers, coatings professionals, asset owners, inspectors, researchers, and industry leaders.
What is pipeline integrity and why is it important?
Pipeline integrity refers to the processes, technologies, inspections, and maintenance programs used to ensure pipelines operate safely and reliably throughout their service life. Operators monitor threats such as corrosion, coating degradation, mechanical damage, and hydrogen embrittlement. Explore the Pipeline Industry Report.
What is hydrogen embrittlement?
Hydrogen embrittlement occurs when hydrogen enters a metal and reduces its ductility and toughness, increasing the risk of cracking and failure. Understanding the phenomenon is increasingly important as hydrogen becomes a larger part of future energy systems.
What are the AMPP VIS Guides?
AMPP VIS Guides are visual reference standards used to evaluate surface preparation quality before protective coatings are applied. VIS Guide 10 and VIS Guide 11 support emerging surface preparation technologies including plasma cleaning and laser ablation.
